“The Psychedelic Religion of Biblical Prophecy”

Research and naturalistic psychedelic drug use usually emphasizes a "psychedelic religion of mystical consciousness"—a loose mixture of Eastern, New Age, and evangelical Christian spirituality. Its goal is a unitive-mystical experience: content-free; in which the individual self, space, and time appear to drop away. However, this is only one of several possible models, and downgrades the more frequent phenomenon: a content-full experience with which a well-preserved personal ego interacts in a temporo-spatial context. This type of interactive-relational spiritual experience reaches its highest level in the prophetic tradition of the Hebrew Bible—a text undergirding Western civilization for millennia.  The prophetic experience is full of content, more real than real, and situated in time and space. Most important, it is saturated with verbal information providing guidance intended to benefit the individual and society . Thus, prophecy offers an alternative Western psychological and spiritual paradigm for understanding and applying what happens when people take psychedelics.
